Texas S3DA Hosts 3-D and Outdoor Target Championship

Williamsburg, KY – Texas S3DA recently completed a number of firsts for the State of Texas. Texas S3DA hosted the 1st ever 3-D and Outdoor Target State Championship at Archers Haven Field Archery Club in Canyon Lake, Texas. Many spectators were present for the event, while 16 archers competed for top spots within their class and division. Archers from Alamo Area S3DA, Third Coast S3DA and Woodlands S3DA all competed in the 3-D event, while the nation’s first Para S3DA Team, San Antonio Xtreme S3DA, competed in the Outdoor Target Championship.

The Tournament Director and TX S3DA Regional Coordinator, Roger Koss stated, “What made this event different from other events, was the inclusion of the San Antonio Xtreme S3DA Team. San Antonio Extreme Archery is a division of Kinetic kids, which provides sporting and competition opportunities for children with physical disabilities.”

Arturo Liendo is an Olympic Recurve archer who only has complete function of his left arm, yet is able to shoot an Olympic Recurve bow utilizing a mouth tab. Arturo recently competed in the Texas Regional Para Games, where he competed at 30 Meters on a 122 cm target face and scored an 86 for his first competition. The S3DA competition utilized the Adaptive Sports USA Junior National Archery format, which put Arturo shooting at 30 meters on an 80 cm face. While the distance was the same, the smaller target face made it more challenging for him. Yet, he was able to improve his 6-end score by 84 points.

The Official Judge, Barry Watson stated, “Proud of everyone and their hard work. This competition proves that archery is a sport for all ages and abilities.”

Texas S3DA would like to thank the interns from Kinetic Kids (Natachi Iheandacho, Nathan Goss and Nelly Munoz), families and volunteers from Corpus Christi who helped make this event possible. Jennifer Salas and her sons Mateo and Enrique, and Amanda Hernandez and her son Danny not only helped with concessions, but also assisted in retrieving all the targets at the end of the competition.

Started in December 2012 by the Scholastic Archery Association, S3DA has grown exponentially as a next step program to follow introductory programs offered as part of 4-H or the National Archery in Schools Program. S3DA addresses the need for a program to bridge beginning target archery experience and more advanced activities such as 3-D shooting and bowhunting. The program currently operates across the United States with hundreds of certified coaches serving

thousands of young archers, grades 3–12. For more information on S3DA membership go to: WWW.S3DA.ORG or email: infos3darchery@gmail.com. Check out S3DA on Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram
