GUNS Oct. Features The Marlin 1895 SBL

Is It Really A Marlin? It Is … And More! GUNS Oct. Features The Marlin 1895 SBL

The first Ruger-made Marlin rifle, the 1895 SBL, commands the cover of GUNS Magazine’s October issue and boasts a host of improvements and strong business backing. As Contributor Wayne Van Zwoll notes in the feature article, “The future is looking bright for the venerable brand.”

Van Zwoll was impressed by the SBL’s wood-to-metal fit and the receiver’s high polish. Ripples and dished screw holes show up immediately on bright surfaces. A flat finish is hard to achieve. This Marlin has it. He summarizes, “With a neigh-on weatherproof finish and furniture, and sporting a host of practical touches, the Marlin 1895 SBL would be a fine choice for a hard-use field gun!”

Massad Ayoob goes hands-on with a Langdon Tactical Technologies (LTT) custom GLOCK 19 Gen5, with features such as unique “brick” pattern stippling on the gripping surfaces, pre-installed C&T SpeedFeed mag well and, to pique the interest of more serious shooters, an Apex trigger. He contends, “It’s the experienced shooter who most appreciates the Langdon treatment. What you’re paying for is improved performance and, let’s face it, a prestige factor. Just as a Ford Mustang with a Shelby badge on it isn’t ‘just a Mustang’ anymore, a GLOCK with an LTT logo stamped on it isn’t ‘just a GLOCK’ anymore.”

October’s Gun of the Month giveaway package includes two (yes, two!) firearms from Hi-Point: The Model 995 “American Flag” Carbine and the Model C9 9mm. The 995 Carbine in 9mm features an all-weather, molded polymer stock, a threaded 1/2x28 16.5" barrel, 10-round factory magazine, Picatinny rails and fully adjustable sights. The 10-round C9 has a 3.5" barrel, high-impact polymer frame and grips and 3-dot fully adjustable sights. The prize package is valued at $621. Also in Oct. GUNS, Payton Miller contends the Colt Trooper — “one of the sexiest and slickest of the Nifty ’50s” — is a gem worth digging for in the Surplus & Classic column. Alan Garbers warns readers not to fall victim to online gun scammers in “Knowledge Is Power,” and provides ways to easily identify fake listings. And in the Handloading installment, John Taffin discusses reloading the .38-40, the “O.G.” .40 caliber that holds a soft spot in his sixgunnin’ heart.
