Thompson Finishes Fifth at World Cup Tucson

TUCSON, Arizona  – Two-time Olympian Frank Thompsonfinished in fifth place today in Men’s Skeet at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup for Shotgun at the Tucson Trap and Skeet Club.

Thompson (Alliance, Nebraska) finished Qualification with a score of 122/125 targets. He and three other athletes were tied with 122 hits and had to shootoff for placement in the Final, with Thompson landing in the last position.

“Today was pretty good,” Thompson said. “Had a 74 [of the 75 targets thrown today] so that was pretty exciting. Ran my last round because I knew I’d need a good score to get into the Final and I ended up walking in so I was pretty happy with that.”

Once in the Final, however, Thompson missed six targets in the first 30 and was eliminated in the fifth position.

“Would have been a lot cooler if I won,” Thompson said, laughing. “The Final just got a little bit tight. Wasn’t flowing as good as it was before. It’s something to work on, and I’ll get better in the next one.”

Thompson also finished in fifth place in the World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico and eighth at the World Cup in Siggiewi, Malta this year. He will also compete as a member of the team that will go to the ISSF World Championship in Changwon, South Korea next month.

Phillip Jungman (U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit/Caldwell, Texas) was just one target shy of a potential Finals berth with 121 hits to finish in seventh place. Jungman’s USAMU teammate Dustan Taylor (Staley, North Carolina) finished in 29th place with 118 hits.

Competition continues tomorrow with the start of training for the Men’s and Women’s Trap events. The Women’s Trap Final will take place on Monday, the Men’s Trap Final on Tuesday and the Trap Mixed Team event on Wednesday.
