Today's feature is from the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Since early June, scores have been pouring in weekly for the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Home Range Appreciation Series of events. Introduced in 2020 to supplement the cancelled National Matches at Camp Perry, clubs from Texas, Mississippi, Wyoming, New York and several other states have taken advantage of the unique event – participating in an assortment of rifle, pistol, CMP Games, smallbore and air rifle competitions at their local ranges.

“Thanks, CMP, for opening the Home Series,” said Hornell Sportsmans Club CMP match coordinator, Joe Menichino. “We are all disappointed that the Perry matches were cancelled, and this series gives us a chance to shoot and compete.”

The Hornell Sportsmans Club is located in Hornell, New York, just a few miles west of the Finger Lakes Region and south of Buffalo. With just under 150 current members, the club contains pistol and rifle ranges at 25, 50 and 100 yards. Hornell also utilizes a 50-foot indoor pistol and smallbore range and offers club winter leagues featuring weekly archery, pistol and smallbore sporter rifle matches. Hunter Safety courses are also offered, as needed.

Participating Hornell Sportsmen Club members in the first CMP Home Range Appreciation Series. Below, with their first series completed in July, the club hopes to host another series in August.

Hornell’s CMP Sanctioned 200-yard matches are shot on a local farm that holds five firing points, which is where the club members fired their first set of Home Appreciation Series Garand and Springfield events on July 10.

“The first matches went perfectly,” Menichino said. “We have a great old Marine for our range officer, the farm owner, who is also a member of the club and did an amazing job preparing the 200 yard range.”

Next up, the club hopes to hold their own M1A and Vintage rifle matches in August.

Menichino says that although the apparent COVID-19 concerns are limiting the club’s activities overall this year, they still host weekly pistol matches on Wednesday evenings through the summer. Smallbore rifle and archery are still scheduled to start in September. Stay up-to-date on Hornell’s upcoming events by visiting their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/HornellSportsmansClub.

So far, 42 Rifle and Pistol Home Series events have been fired, with 44 remaining on the current schedule list. In Air Rifle and Smallbore, 16 events have already been completed, with 19 additional events currently scheduled.

About the CMP Home Range Appreciation Series:

To fill the void of the unfortunate withdrawal of the 2020 National Matches from the annual schedule, the CMP has prepared a solution that will allow competitive marksmen the opportunity to compete with one another during the summer months, from the comfort of their local ranges.

The CMP “Home Range Appreciation Series” is a collection of rifle, pistol, CMP Games, smallbore and air rifle competitions (open to both adult and junior athletes), that will be fired in local club matches and compared against overall scores from around the nation. Many have already participated in their home events, with many scheduled events still left to be fired in the coming weeks.

Upcoming Rifle and Pistol Home Range Matches on the schedule can be viewed here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hakB2fXmbQtuWe7LUsiwSatvIJalMKUthOjRo5JiJtw/edit.

Find Air Rifle and Smallbore events here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XX3RNKv5wfTEzNyEoerek-pZJwlJbzedy68dRfap9Eo/edit#gid=0.

As a reminder, all matches MUST be fired by Sept. 8, 2020, and results received by Sept. 14. Late results will not be accepted. Results will be final on Oct. 1, 2020.

For questions on Rifle/Pistol/Games events, contact Christina Roguski at 419-635-2141 ext. 714 or croguski@thecmp.org. Questions on Smallbore/Air Rifle events should be directed to Katie Harrington at 419-635-2141 ext. 731 or kharrington@thecmp.org.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program is a federally chartered 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation. It is dedicated to firearm safety and marksmanship training and to the promotion of marksmanship competition for citizens of the United States.
