Between The Berms

Junior shooter Tori Nonaka, with her purple slide Glock, is the newest member of Team Glock.

Registration is now open for ICORE 20th Annual Smith & Wesson IRC.
Well, not more than 30 minutes after last Wednesday's edition of the Shooting Wire appeared in mailboxes talking about the prospect of Tori Nonaka joining Team Glock, did a press release from the company hit outdoor media inboxes confirming the news. This is a smart move by Glock which already has Dave Sevigny and Randi Rogers but lost Jessie Abbate. Considering Tori is already among the top women shooters (while still in high school), it's clear that Glock sees a bright future for her and her trademark purple slide Glock. 2011 is a big year for two shooting sports organizations. While the Steel Challenge is celebrating its 30th anniversary, ICORE has hit its own major milestone with the announcement of the 20th annual Smith & Wesson International Revolver Championship. Registration for the IRC is now open and there is an early bird discount of $60 if you register by April 1. The match will again be held in San Luis Obispo, Calif., one of the most beautiful areas within the Golden State making it well worth the trip. If you've got a wheelgun and your schedule is free June 2-5, you should seriously think about entering the IRC.
Who knew that Zombies need coffee.
Taking a break from his usual insightful look into the shooting sports industry, Shooting Gallery host Michael Bane is taking on one of the most important issues of the day: Zombies. If you ever wanted to know how to survive the coming Zombie Apocalypse, Bane-style, then check out his blog for pics from the filming and look for the future zombie episode of Shooting Gallery.
Phil Strader's popular ProAm match is filling up.
Phil Strader, match director for the Pro Am, has opened registration for the 2011 Pro Am Shooting Championship which will be held this year at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, Fla. on July 15-17. The match already has over 40 sponsors (with more expected) and competitors can compete in one or both of two pistol divisions; Limited and Open. Those interested in entering the match can register online, but should do so sooner rather than later since with over 350 shooters last year, the Pro Am is likely to fill up quickly. The Scholastic Steel Challenge will be holding a free SSC demonstration at the "Home of Champions" at Fort Benning, Ga. The "Champions" are the members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit - you know, the shooters that go around collecting national titles and Olympic medals when they aren't training our soldiers or overseas training Afghan and Iraqi police. Thanks to Atlanta Arms & Ammo, those taking part in the two-day event on the Parks Range this Friday and Saturday will shoot free ammo. Of course SSC sponsors Glock and Smith & Wesson will be there to give participants something to burn that ammo with. If you're a fan of Top Shot on History - and who isn't - then you know Athena Lee and Maggie Reese have both been eliminated. Yeah, we here at the Shooting Wire hate that fact just as much as you. But, if you want to know what it's like being on the show then check out the Women of USPSA blog and Athena's interview with Maggie. Top Shot Spoiler Alert! Don't read this if you haven't yet watched last night's episode of Top Shot... Speed was the name of the game last night as season one competitors Blake Miguez and J.J. Racaza returned as expert instructors. Proving you can lead a horse to water but can't make him hold the gun correctly, Jay Lim decided to blew off expert advise during training from Miguez, Racaza and his own teammate Chris Tilley. Well, what do they know about gripping a 1911, right? Facing a 100-plate speed shooting challenge, Tilley started off for the Blue team and showed some of that USPSA speed he's famous for, giving them a quick lead. In the end Blue team's Kyle Frasure's strong finish won the challenge for Blue. It's important to note that the Red team missed Brian Zins in the challenge after Blue team wisely sat him. Zins, as every NRA member knows, is the king with the 1911. After the requisite drama, Red team elimination came down to Eric Anderson, Jamie Franks and a pair of high speed, low drag RazorCat Open pistols from LimCat. Facing revolving wheels of plates, that seemed to stump both shooters at first, Franks outgunned Anderson to remain on the show.
