Between The Berms: Back In Black (Friday)

Nov 14, 2012
Shopping for a shooter and not knowing exactly what they want is always a bit of a headache. This is particularly true if the person shopping is a non-shooter and completely unfamiliar with specific brands and models. Short of getting a detailed wish list, here are some non-firearm suggestions ranging from inexpensive stocking stuffers to "you-want-me-to-spend-how-much?" items. One of the things to look for when shopping are the items a shooter wants but just can't bring him- or herself to purchase. Every shooter has a list of items they'd buy if.... So figuring out what those are and buying them for your favorite shooter is a sure path to Christmas Day victory, or eight straight days of Hanukkah success... or the equivalent of surviving a Festivus feats of strength test. So here goes...
Break-Free CLP Wipes: (MSRP $4.98) The very definition of stocking stuffer, the Break-Free CLP Wipes not only fit in any stocking but are priced right too. I would not have thought to include these in my range bag for gun cleaning purposes until Rob Leatham - a guy that knows a thing or two about keeping a gun running - told me the CLP Wipes are in his range bag and his go-to item for cleaning his pistols. This one is a total no-brainer for any and all shooters.
Bianchi Foldaway Holster: (MSRP $15.25 or $27.50) The Bianchi Model 101 Foldaway is a perfect stocking stuffer. This simple yet ingenious design isn't meant to replace your regular CCW holster but instead supplement your existing carry system for those times when an easy, casual option is all you need. The Foldaway is available in tan or black full grain leather in a plain finish to match the wearer's belt, and is offered in two sizes to fit a variety of medium and large frame semiautomatic firearms. The combo pack ($27.50) provides one in each color.
T-Reign Retractable Gear Tethers: (MSRP $15.95 to $27.95) This is a simple item with plenty of applications, and another perfect stocking stuffer. The T-Reign Gear Tethers come in different gear size configurations with tethers from 24" to 48" for holding everything from keys and small tools to game calls and personal electronics. Not every vest or range bag has all the pockets you need so something like a T-Reign tether expands your options and increases accessibility to key items. Reloading Manuals: (MSRP $21.99 to $40.00) If you're shopping for a reloader then you might want to consider one (or all) of these reloading manuals from three well known names in bullets. Choose from either the Berger Bullets Reloading Manual, the 9th Edition Hornady® Handbook of Cartridge Reloading or Nosler's Reloading Guide #7. Remember to ask for hints as to which brand's manual your loved one would prefer.
Do All King Pin X Bowling Pin Target: (MSRP $34.99) Bowling pins are wicked good fun to shoot so the King Pin X is the ticket for handgun calibers ranging from .22LR to .45ACP. The pins are made of a solid maple core with a 3mm polyurethane protective outer coating. The only issue you'll run into is not actually buying enough of these. Remember, One Is None so start at two. Do All 3-D Prairie Dog Target: (MSRP $99.99) The 12.5" tall self-healing prairie dog target from Do All is for the rifle shooter who loves going after prairie dogs...even if they can't make the trip out West. A couple of these placed out on a 100+ yard range will do the trick. Once again one is probably none.
Safariland Dual Rifle Case: (MSRP $129.00 or $149.00) Safariland's Model 4552 Dual Rifle Case comes in either 36" or 46" length and is just the ticket for heading to the range, regardless of whether or not you plan on shooting a 3-Gun match. Team Safariland's Michael Voigt had his out at the media day event I attended and - thanks to my endless groveling - Safariland was kind enough to send me one. Now that I have the case, I can completely justify getting a tactical shotgun and tricked-out AR.
Crimson Trace Rail Masters: (MSRP $139.00 or $149.00) Designed to fit rail-equipped guns, the Rail Master CMR-202 from Crimson Trace is a universal fit CR2 battery powered tactical light with 100 lumen output. The CMR-201 is the red laser version of the Rail Master and runs for over four hours on a 1/3N lithium battery. It too is a universal fit device for rail equipped firearms.
Streamlight Waypoint Rechargeable Spotlight: (MSRP $200.00) Considering what can happen when a hurricane rolls through your neck of the woods, something like Streamlight's Waypoint Rechargeable Spotlight might not be a bad gift idea. The lithium ion rechargeable battery has a runtime of 5 hours at high (300 lumens), 50 hours low (25 lumens) and 35 hours in emergency signal mode. Best of all it's waterproof to two meters but will float if dropped in the water.
Leupold DeltaPoint: (MSRP $499.99) Recently there's been a lot of attention on the use of the small reflex-style sight mounted on a pistol slide. And that focus has been shifting from competition to personal defense. Though a bit too pricey to be a "stocking stuffer" Leupold's DeltaPoint Reflex Sight is one of those items that a shooter might not buy on their own but would love to get. You'll want to check to see what firearms you are shopping for to make sure the DeltaPoint can be mounted to it, as some modification to the slide will be required. - Paul Erhardt, Editor, the Outdoor Wire Digital Network Got shooting sports news?
