Between The Berms: Some Odds, Some Ends, Some Rants

Baby On Board... For those of you pregnant, or know somebody that is, and looking to shoot, Julie "I'm so pregnant I'm about to burst" Golob has her new podcast up and it's all about shooting with a baby on board. She's got a little experience in this area as she is carrying Julie G. Junior Shooting Team member #2, and she's won a couple shooting titles. Personal experience coupled with some actual research on the subject makes this a good podcast for reference. And shooting while pregnant is not that uncommon. With apologies to TGGO (The Great Golob One), my favorite pregnant shooter is none other than Mrs. Laurel Yoshimoto who won the speed shooting championship's Baby On Board division a couple years ago. You call it a 'baby bump" but I'm calling it a "speed bump." InterWebs 2.0... Every time somebody launches a new site they throw out all sorts of cool marketing lingo about how the site is nothing anybody has ever seen and all the world will come to it, blah, blah, blah. Well, in the case of IDPA's new site, which is set to launch today, Public Enemy's warning of "Don't Believe The Hype" definitely doesn't fit.
On Monday, Drew Hill from Range Log, the people partnering with IDPA to create the new IDPA.com, walked me through the site. Most organization websites are just godawful and this includes the previous IDPA site. This new one however will deliver a HUGE amount of value to members, match directors and clubs. For instance, imagine shooting a match and when the final scores are uploaded at 4:30pm you get an email at 4:31pm with your scores and a link that allows you to delve deep into the scoring data to compare your performance against the rest of the field. If you shoot a classifier you can compare your time against all other CDP shooters in IDPA, or CDP shooters within your class, or just in your home state, or even just your club. Within your profile on the site you can compare your performance against friends or even the top shooters, and customize your profile to help attract sponsors. The tools for clubs and match directors are even more impressive in that they bring an already tight IDPA community closer together. Clubs can with ease pull stage concepts from other matches around the country. Imagine planning a course of fire made up of the coolest stages from the biggest matches. Monthly matches can quickly become reenactments of the sport's major championships. Even more important than the tremendous benefits the site provides to members is the value it brings to IDPA's industry partners. With the vast data management capabilities that RangeLog is known for, one can easily see a day in the near future when IDPA can provide companies and industry organizations, like NSSF, with hard (and accurate) data on the number of rounds fired in competition, the total number of trips to the range a shooter makes in IDPA competition, the average number of trips an IDPA member makes. For data junkies the possibilities are nearly limitless, and far too many to list here. You marketing folks are going to want to contact IDPA HQ for more details - trust me. Get Your Bacon On... Bacon and shooting go together like, well, anything and bacon. There is a well documented history of bacon-fueled shooting excellence, and if you give me a minute or two I'll make some examples up. So, with that in mind, I encourage you to visit The Bacon Affairs, where the Bacon Maven herself delivers an almost daily heaping helping of bacony goodness. It will improve your scores. Oh yes, it will. And now for something completely different... Got Ammo?... Of course not, because you're like the rest of us and struggling to find some. Standing in what passes for a modern-day bread line at 6:00am every morning hoping to get that one box of 9mm the local chain store will allow you to purchase. Face it folks, this is the Great Ammo Depression, and brother can you spare some rounds? I know what you're going to say. You're going to point me towards Mark Keefe's article which explains the immutable laws of supply and demand and how a near irrational demand by so many far exceeds the immediate supply. Well, I'll have none of that. First, I don't care if this Mark Keefe guy is the editor of American Rifleman, making him one of the most important and influential editors in the shooting world, or that he's among the most knowledgeable experts when it comes to firearms and the industry. And I don't care if he's an infinitely better writer than yours truly. The fact of the matter is that all that doesn't mean a thing because I KNOW it's the Department of Homeland Security that's bought up all the ammo, and that they're doing so in advance of the day when they'll turn over control of the U.S. Government to the United Nations to facilitate that organization's plan to implement Sharia law. And While I'm On The Subject... I know that Julie Golob, clearly a co-conspirator of Keefe's, is pitching her 5 Ways To Cope With The Ammo Crisis as a way to focus our attention elsewhere.
Well Miss Julie G., here are two more steps I'm adding to your list. No. 6 - Panic. That's right. Nothing ever really gets done until you panic and waiting until the DHS armored vehicles start rolling down the street to start is too late. Panic now! And No. 7 - Hoard. Two words: Stock Pile. Maybe that's one, but whatever, you get the point. When Gideon blows that horn I want to be standing on top of a mountain of ammo, ready to take on all comers. ...Which reminds me. Before that apocalypse comes I need to launch my new line of Tactical Tinfoil Hats. Available in a variety of non-reflective earth tones and digital camo patterns, the hats not only block those harmful RFID scanning rays but provide the kind of low-profile, stealthy look that's all the rage this season. The hats will be followed by a line of anti-morale patches under the brand name "No-Tac"...Once You Go No-Tac, You Never Go On A Date Again. Previews of Coming Attractions... Next week it's some honest-to-God legitimately cool stuff as The Shooting Wire heads back to the Joint Service Academy Combat Weapons Championship being hosted once again by Smith & Wesson. Looking forward to seeing the United States Coast Guard Academy, the United States Military Academy at West Point, the United States Naval Academy and Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University go head-to-head. - Paul Erhardt, Editor, the Outdoor Wire Digital Network Got shooting sports news?
