Since 1981, The World Games have been the premiere multi-sport international event for sports not contested in the Olympics—including compound and field archery.

They are usually held one year after the Summer Olympics, and are governed by the International World Games Association, under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. This year, The World Games will come to the USA for the first time in over 40 years. The last time the U.S. hosted the Games was their 1981 inauguration in California.

In 2022, Birmingham, Alabama will host the event from July 7-17. The Games will feature some of the world’s best competitors in compound target archery, as well as recurve and barebow field archery, joining 3,600 athletes from more than 100 nations.

Top World Archery officials say that the compound event will be closely watched by the International Olympic Committee as it considers the possibility of including compound archery in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Top archery competitors including Sara Lopez of Colombia, Mike “Mr. Perfect” Schloesser of Netherlands, Abishek Verma of India, and 2021 World Champion Nico Wiener of Austria, will compete in compound, while Germany’s Olympic Medalist Lisa Unruh and her husband, top European recurve competitor, Florian Unruh, will compete in recurve field. Five-time world field champion, Erik Jonsson of Sweden, will be showing off his barebow field skills.
