RECOIL Issue 63

APPLETON, Wis. (September 27, 2022) – RECOIL Magazine, a publication of CMG West, LLC, has released its latest issue, number 63.

There’s a distinct Eastern European flavor to this issue, starting with our cover gun. We’re always on the lookout for new riffs on an old tune, and the Tinck Arms Perun’s mixture of DI and piston operation, coupled with an extensive use of existing AR parts, was begging for a deep dive, so Steven Kuo gets to grips with it on page 68. No, it’s not going to displace America’s favorite rifle from its sales throne, but it’s an interesting carbine nonetheless and worthy of examination.

With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine now months into what was supposed to be a weeklong operation, we decided that was worth a closer look as well. Given that this conflict will have a major impact on everything from small unit tactics to our strategic orientation in the Pacific, the quality of reporting from that part of the world left a lot to be desired. So our editor Iain Harrison did what any red-blooded American would do and hopped on a plane to see for himself.

He started this assignment with a healthy dose of skepticism born of experience. In another war and another century, Iain had firsthand experience of dealing with Ukrainian troops, and to say they were a sh*t show would be a disservice to sh*t. They were unsurpassed in both incompetence and corruption, and as our encounter was during a UN operation, there was plenty of competition for the top slot. Couple this with the current U.S. administration, which has demonstrated a breathtaking commitment to form over function, and a 20-year-long period of squandering American blood and treasure, and it’s very easy to shrug and seek refuge in moral equivalence. This time was different. Although there are some glaring gaps in their logistics, leadership, and training, the troops Iain met were highly motivated and determined to see the job through.

Even the International Legion soldiers, who were bearing the brunt of fighting in areas of the east, were committed to going back into there, after being given time to lick their wounds. Is there still corruption in the chain of command, all the way up to cabinet level? We guarantee it. Seventy years of Communist rule leaves a stain that’s hard to erase. But progress is being made, and there’s a palpable sense of national pride among the civilian population that we hope will carry them through to further reform, in parallel with improvements to their military.

In this issue we also check out Springfield Armory’s new 2011, the Prodigy, review Abel and Primary Weapons Systems new suppressors, take a deep dive into two of Scandinavia’s latest bolt gun chassis, look at how to move and camo yourself like a sniper, speak with Firearms Regulatory Accountability Coalition about their latest pro-2A efforts, and much more.
