S3DA Names Mindy Mair as Utah State Coordinator

Williamsburg, KY – Scholastic 3-D Archery has named Mindy Mair as the new Utah S3DA State Coordinator. As the State Coordinator, Mindy will oversee all aspects of the S3DA program in Utah, including promoting the program across the state to gain team and individual memberships, providing trainings for new coaches, and providing S3DA participants multiple monthly competition venues (tournaments) with minimal travel. Mindy is very excited about the position and has already started advertising about Utah S3DA. Her main long-term goal is to provide every child in the state of Utah the opportunity to try archery and by the end of 2022 have at least five NEW S3DA teams.

Mindy grew up in a family of big outdoor enthusiasts, as she spent most of her childhood camping, fishing, shooting guns and hunting. She is a lifelong resident of the state of Utah and currently resides in Vernal, Utah with her son, Kristopher. When Kristopher started school, Mindy decided to make a career shift and obtained her CDL and started driving a truck for a living. In 2011, she was diagnosed with cancer and had to quit her job. After some time in the hospital, she was blessed to roll out in a wheelchair. The good news was she beat cancer, but the bad news is she would be using a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Due to many doctor visits out of town, she pulled her son out of public school and began homeschooling. Homeschooling is where their archery journey truly began.

Mindy’s son, Kristopher took a fishing class thru the local recreation district in conjunction with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. The class was all homeschooled boys and Kristopher enjoyed it so much that he asked the DNR what other classes they offered. The gentleman told him he was trying to get NASP started in the area and all they needed was some coaches and then they could run archery for the local homeschoolers. Mindy grew up shooting a bow, so she said sign me up and started the program for the homeschoolers. The DNR started teaching NASP thru the recreation center and thru local elementary, junior high, and private schools. As Kristopher got more involved, Mindy started her own JOAD program. Mindy said, “We have traveled the country shooting in different tournaments and have loved every second of it. This has been a wonderful experience that we have shared as a family. My son become a certified archery coach as well and is now coaching beginner archers.”

Mindy is currently the USA Archery (FITA Archers of Utah) State Secretary. She says as her body continues to deteriorate, she is not shooting and competing as much, so she has focused more on coaching and managing. Between the local schools, recreation district, boy scouts, girl scouts, church groups, 4H, the local 3D archery club and other organizations wanting archery, Mindy has been blessed to introduce roughly 7,622 students to the great sport of archery and says that Utah is just getting started.

She was introduced to S3DA a few months ago by the Idaho State Coordinator, Eldon Vieira, when he invited her to come over to their indoor state competition. Mindy took the invitation and had an absolute blast as she said everyone was very welcoming to the Utah teams. She stated, “Being able to watch the kids put their heart and soul into shooting and walk away with a smile and a handshake no matter if it was a good day or a bad day for flinging arrows is what makes this program so special. The scholarship opportunities really opened my eyes to a world of possibilities considering I thought people shot archery just for fun.”

Mindy looks to continue the partnerships with NASP, USA Archery, NFAA, and other local clubs to grow the sport of archery in Utah. The Utah S3DA 3D State Championship (Utah S3DA’s first sanctioned event) will take place at Steinaker State Park on May 7th, 2022.
