S3DA Hosts Fifth Annual Outdoor Target National Championship

Williamsburg, KY – On July 14th-17th, 2022, S3DA hosted the 5th annual S3DA Outdoor Target National Championship at Joyce Park in Fairfield, Ohio. Joyce Park is a beautiful 300+ acre spread of green space offering multiple playgrounds, picnic areas, sports facilities, bike paths, hiking trails, skatepark and restrooms. The site is conveniently located 40 minutes from downtown Cincinnati. Many archers had the opportunity to shoot at this venue last year but for some it was a brand-new experience! Over 250 student archers from sixty-three S3DA teams across twelve states gathered to compete for their chance to earn the title of “2022 S3DA Outdoor Target National Champion”. In addition, students that shot the Indoor National Championship, 3D National Championship and this Outdoor Target National Championship qualified to become the 2022 S3DA National Shooters of the Year.

The Outdoor Target competition consisted of Jr. Eagle and Eagle archers shooting two rounds of 6 ends of 6 arrows for a total 72 arrow qualification score. Youth and Young Adult archers shot two rounds of 12 ends of 6 arrows at the designated distance for their division and class over a two-day span for a total 144-arrow qualification score. After all archers completed their qualification rounds, they were seeded into a bracket based on their qualification scores to compete in head-to-head elimination matches derived from the top 4 archers in the Eagle division, top 8 archers in the Youth division, and the top 16 archers in the Young Adult division.

The tournament began Friday morning as vehicles began to arrive on-site bright and early, with Jr. Eagle and Eagle archers making their way to the field of play for the first qualification round. As their line concluded, the Youth and Young Adult archers were up next. Archers shot their qualification rounds on Friday and Saturday and then waited patiently to see where they were seeded for the elimination rounds on Sunday. Unfortunately, rounds of storms came in early Sunday morning, so the Tournament Staff made the decision to cancel the elimination rounds for everyone’s safety. All the archers were awarded placements based on their qualification scores.

Some of the staff from Travel Butler County had the opportunity to stop by the event and Sales Manager – Sports & Events, Matt Prewitt stated, “Butler County, Ohio was honored to host the 2022 S3DA Outdoor Target Nationals. Over 250 athletes treated spectators to an exciting competition in Hamilton, Ohio. We are hopeful to continue our partnership with S3DA into the future and excited to see the event grow in the coming years.”

This event would not have been made possible without the help of Ohio S3DA State Coordinator, Billy Lawson, Jim & Liz Coombe, and dedicated parents, Coaches, State & Regional Coordinators, and many volunteers, who selflessly pledge their time to make sure these student archers are focused and safe, but most of all, having fun while competing.

The S3DA National Staff is already hard at work planning future events and looking forward to the 2023 S3DA season.
