South Dakota —After coming off a successful elk season the previous fall, Melissa Bachman draws a coveted tag in New Mexico and prepares to bowhunt for bugling elk. Like most hunters, Bachman tries to put in for tags in premium areas whenever possible – but it takes time. After nearly 10-years she finally drew a tag in unit 16A and is hunting with John Chapel of New Mexico Professional Big Game Hunting.

After ensuring her Mathews AVAIL bow is all dialed in, Bachman is excited to start hearing screaming bulls. Her and Chapel start climbing up and down the steep terrain to gain elevation for glassing. They are able to get bulls to respond to their calls…but closing in on them proves challenging.

“This is one of the most challenging and physical hunts I’ve done in awhile,” shared Bachman. “It was hot and dry – you were covered in sweat and dust from start to finish. By the end of the hunt my hair looked a different color from all the dust and dirt. On top of it all they recently had a burn through here, so the ground was crunchy with downed trees and dried leaves. Trying to get within bow range in this environment was tricky!”

Because it was so hot and dry, Bachman and Chapel took to setting up a pine-and-twig blind over watering holes. And sure enough…cows – and bulls – were making their way to the water. Tune in to see how close Bachman gets to massive bull!
