GunBroker.com’s No Lowballers Podcast Debates Long-Range Hunting

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Long-range hunting. Three words guaranteed to divide any group of hunters, it’s a topic often discussed with varying degrees of civility.

In a two-part episode on the topic, the No Lowballers panel discusses long-range hunting, what exactly is considered long-range, who should and shouldn’t do it, and what the ethics are of the practice.

Part one features Tony Smotherman of Bergara rifles, who takes the stance that any shot taken within the skill of the hunter and within the limits of the conditions is a fair shot. The issue, he tells us, is that people overestimate their skill and undervalue the need to practice.

Part two has Scott Rupp editor-in-chief of Rifle Shooter magazine, who questions whether long-range hunting is even considered hunting. The optics, ammo and rifles have outpaced most people’s ability, and the temptation to take a longer shot than may be necessary is great. If there’s the chance to close up on your game, Rupp says, then as hunters we should always take it.

Where do you come down on the topic? We invite you to take in both viewpoints and see if your feelings are confirmed or if they may have changed.
