APPLETON, Wis. – RECOIL Magazine, a publication of CMG West, LLC, has released its latest issue, number 58. As we meander toward the end of 2021, it’s worthwhile casting a glance over our shoulder to check on what’s happened this year and to see what’s coming up from behind to shove us onto the sidewalk. President Potato campaigned on a platform to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, reimpose a ban on the sale and manufacture of “assault weapons” and magazines, shift existing semi-autos onto the NFA registry, institute a “buyback” whereby gun owners would have to surrender their legally held firearms and be compensated for their loss with their own tax dollars, criminalize the private sale of guns, expand the number of prohibited persons, eliminate the sale of ammunition and firearms parts over the internet, ram “red flag” laws down states’ throats, pass legislation requiring gun owners to lock up their home defense guns, and of course funnel slush funds to favored special interest groups. This has, naturally, been memory-holed by a compliant and fawning media.
About the only thing this administration has been able to accomplish on the national level is getting a bunch of “AFT” bureaucrats to take a break from rubbing one out in the stationery closet just long enough to jot down a wish list of rules concerning pistol braces. No matter that they’re arbitrary, capricious, contradictory, and utterly unenforceable. Like most government agencies whose main role is simply to ensure their continued existence, meaningful output is tough to measure, so they concentrate on being perceived to be doing something.
In the meantime, and in the world outside the beltway, real Americans have seen the shift in messaging from our establishment elites. Just a few years ago, the narrative was, “we have to ban gun guns to protect the children.” Now it’s, “we need to get guns out of the hands of people who don’t think exactly like us.” And folks are noticing. Both legacy and new media have a vested interest in neatly dividing the population into opposing tribes, as this maximizes synthetic outrage, views, and clicks, delivering impressions to advertisers and lining their pockets, one $8 CPM at a time. Don’t fall for it. If you’re a new gun owner whose views on the most fundamental civil right have been shaped by this last year’s event, then welcome to the fold. It matters not the color of your skin or whom you chose to marry, so long as you’re committed to the constitution of the United States and the ideals it espouses. If you’re a long-time gun owner, then be cautious of those who would seek to undermine the Second Amendment by using other wedge issues to divide the 2A community and fracture a united front. Often, we’re our own worst enemies in this regard.
One of the most vocal and wide-reaching converts to the 2A in recent years is the subject of this issue’s Zeroed In column. Tim Pool started out his evolution on the far reaches of the left wing and has seen all aspects of those wavelengths of the political spectrum. Over this past year, we’ve tried to bring you insights from people who came to the gun rights community from places that most definitely didn’t coincide with the mainstream perception of a gun owner. We believe the fight for our firearms rights is strengthened as a result and hope that next time someone trots out the tired old “fat middle-aged white guy” trope, you drop a copy of RECOIL in their lap.
