Schwanz Wins AR-15/Rockcastle 3-Gun Amateur Division

Montezuma, IA - Sinclair Reloading Technician, Corey Schwanz won the Amateur Division of the AR15.com/Rockcastle Pro-Am 3-Gun Shoot held on August 26th and 27th at the Rockcastle Shooting Center and Park Mammoth Resort. Competing in only his fourth 3-gun competition, Corey finished first out of 145 competitors in the Rockcastle 3-Gun Amateur Division. Corey is an avid shooter and handloader and is a member of Sinclair International's technical staff.

The site of this three-day Pro-Am event was the Rockcastle Shooting Center near Park City, Kentucky. Brownells, Sinclair, Brownells Law Enforcement/Military Division, and Hornady were all major sponsors of the event. The Amateur Division required competitors to compete in seven different stages using handguns, rifles and shotguns in various shooting positions. For the rifle stages, Corey used an AR platform he assembled from a 16" barreled Bravo Company upper receiver chambered in 223 Remington, a Spike's Tactical Lower receiver, a Geissele Super 3-Gun Trigger, and a Burris XTR scope. Corey's shotgun was a Benelli M1 semi-auto fitted with Nordic Components accessories, and his handgun was built by Matt Cheely of Cheely Custom Gunworks on a high-cap STI frame chambered in .40 S&W. Despite having some issues on Stage 3 "Heartbreak Ridge," Corey out shot all other competitors in Stages 5 and 6, helping him achieve the overall win. Corey just recently had competed in the inaugural NRA National Defense Match held at Camp Perry, Ohio, during the NRA National Matches and finished third in the Open Division. Teammate Duane Liptak from Brownells LE/Military was right behind Corey with a respectable 10th place finish.

"This was my first national 3-Gun match and my first time at Rockcastle," said Corey. "The staff, the facilities and the unique stages were just fantastic." Exploring the fun aspects of 3-Gun despite the challenges was part of the total package for Corey. "I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to Rockcastle," he said. "How often does the average guy get to shoot a rifle out of a car or kick down a door while shooting?"
