Willow Slough FWA shooting range will close for improvements

The shooting range at Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area in Newton County will close on Sept. 28 for improvements.

The new range, scheduled to re-open in mid- to late-summer 2016, will include movable target stands, additional pistol stations, flush toilets, a sales area and enhancements to improve shooter safety.

This range will be similar to the modern ranges at Atterbury, J.E. Roush Lake and Kingsbury FWAs.

The improvements are funded with revenue from the federal Wildlife Restoration Act, which originated in 1937. Widely supported by hunters and recreational shooters, the act imposes an excise tax on hunting and shooting equipment and allocates that revenue to state fish & wildlife agencies based on hunter numbers for the state.

In 2014, Indiana received almost $14 million in funding from the Wildlife Restoration Act. These funds allow for improved access and facilities on state fish & wildlife areas.
