Rainfall Closes Shooting Range at Hawkeye Wildlife Area

IOWA CITY - The Tim Dorr rifle and handgun range at the Hawkeye Wildlife Management Area is closed after a nearly six inch rainfall Tuesday night damaged the recently completed renovation on the popular shooting range.

The range had reopened on Monday after undergoing six weeks of work to reshape the drainage and back berms to fix issues with erosion above the range covering the lanes with dirt and mud.

The DNR is working with contractors to see how soon equipment can be brought in to clean up the silt and fix the washouts. If the weather cooperates, contactors expect to reopen July 15.

Hawkeye Wildlife Management Area is in northwest Johnson County.
