New York and Texas Governors Get Pro-Knife Bills, Knife Rights Calls for Action

Texas Bills Update - Email Gov. Abbott TODAY!

Knife Rights supported HB 446, repealing the ban on clubs (including tomahawks) and knuckles (including trench knives and the like), passed the legislature and was transmitted to Governor Abbot for action.

If you are a Texas resident, CLICK HERE to use Knife Rights' Legislative Action Center to contact Governor Abbot and ask him to sign HB 446.

Knife Rights' "Location-Restricted Knife" Law Reform bills, SB 2381 and HB 2342, didn't make it out of the Calendars Committee in the House, which means they are dead for this session.

Unfortunately, despite having overwhelming support from members of the legislature and hundreds of emails from our supporters (thank you!), these bills met the same fate as many other pro-freedom bills this session in Texas. Once again Texas legislative leadership proves that Texas isn't nearly as Texas as most people believe Texas to be.

We would like to thank our bill authors, Representative Harold Dutton, Representative John Frullo and Senator Bryan Hughes, for their efforts on our behalf. Senator Hughes worked hard to get SB 2381 successfully passed in the Senate, while Reps Dutton and Frullo worked tirelessly to get try to get it through the House. Both bills were passed out of committee in the House with only a single nay vote between them. Rep. Dutton even attempted to amend the language from HB 2342/SB 2381 onto another bill late Monday night, but it was shot down over a technicality.

It really helps when you have bill Authors/Sponsors working as hard as these gentlemen did to try to get us over the finish line in Texas. We look forward to working with them in the future to complete what we started in Texas way back in 2013. Eventually we WILL get Texas to be what everyone thinks Texas is, at least in regards to knives.

ACTION ALERT: Knife Rights New York Gravity Knife Ban Repeal Bill Transmitted to Governor Cuomo

After nearly 9 years of effort on the part of Knife Rights, another bill to repeal New York's Gravity Knife Ban, A5944, which would stop the bogus arrests and prosecutions on Gravity Knife charges of knife owners carrying common folding knives in New York City, has been transmitted to Governor Cuomo If you live, work or travel in New York CALL/EMAIL the Governor TODAY and ask him to STOP the OUTRAGEOUS arrests and prosecutions in New York City!

The Governor now has 10 days (excluding Sunday) to sign or veto the bill, or allow it to become law without his signature.

While Gov. Cuomo vetoed the previous two overwhelmingly passed similar bills (2016 & 2017), in significant part due to the opposition of New York County District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. who has championed his prosecutions under the law, even Vance has indicated he will not object to this bill. Gov. Cuomo's own Attorney General has come out in support of this bill, saying, "I believe it's high time that gravity knives be removed from the penal code."

Martin LaFalce of the Legal Aid Society, who has written a number of Amicus Briefs in support of Knife Rights Federal civil rights lawsuit challenging NYC's and Vance's discriminatory enforcement of the law against owners of common folding knives (see below), said, "this is the most unfair law-enforcement practice in New York state."

Knife Rights' longtime allies in this effort, sponsors Assemblyman Dan Quart and Senator Diane Savino and Senator Robert Jackson, are to be congratulated for gaining unanimous approval of this bill this time around.
