COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tennessee's McKenzie Shooting Sports outgunned the YSSA Steel Smashers of Illinois to take the Optics Rifle national title in the Intermediate/Advanced Division at the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Team Championships in Ohio.
Logan Green led the McKenzie Shooting Sports' Caba Coyotes with 50.77 towards the squad's final combined time of 219.18 seconds. Nathan Rorer added 51.23, followed by Drew Beeler with 56.71 and Deven Fields with 60.47. All four shooters are from McKenzie, Tennessee.
Held July 9-16 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio, 320-plus athletes representing 17 states put over 55,000 rounds down range during eight days of competition in the sport of Speed Shooting. The format of the match has shooters facing four stages, each with five steel plates. Racing against an electronic timer, each stage is designed to test a shooter's speed and accuracy.
The YSSA Steel Smashers finished 3.04 seconds behind McKenzie with a team time of 222.22 seconds. The Steel Smashers were led by Thomas Keeshan of Bettendorf, Iowa with 42.96, followed by Nicholas Creger of Milan with 56.87, Ronnie Maas of New Boston with 60.93 and Makinzee Benjamin of Sherrard with 61.46.
The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) is a youth development program in which adult coaches and other volunteers use the shooting sport of Speed Shooting to teach and to demonstrate sportsmanship, responsibility, honesty, ethics, integrity, teamwork, and other positive life skills.
Nationally, there are over 1,300 students and more than 400 coaches from 31 states participating in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program. The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, Inc.
